( Columbus ) – Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray today asked Ohio Senate President Bill Harris, Ohio House Speaker Jon Husted, and Ohio Governor Ted Strickland to consider participating in the proposed Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunities for Military Children.
Developed by The Council of State Governments and the U.S. Department of Defense, the Compact is designed to assist the children of military personnel when military service makes it necessary for the family to move the child from school to school, state to state. Leaders of several other states are currently considering the measure.
Recent statistics from the Department of Defense indicate that Ohio is home to 21,457 children between the ages of 5 and 18 whose parents are engaged in active or reserve military service.
A copy of the letter from Treasurer Cordray to President Harris, Speaker Husted, and Governor Strickland and its accompanying enclosures are attached.
