Darke County Dave will weigh in on future of Ohio's economy Print E-mail

(Greeneville)--While presidential candidates stump across the state discussing ways to revive Ohio 's ailing economy, Darke County Dave , possibly the nation's first prognostic pig, will finally get his chance to weigh in tomorrow morning.

Dave, a locally raised hog, will inaugurate the local Chamber of Commerce's economic forecasting event, rescheduled after the initial “Groundhog Day Breakfast Event” was cancelled because of bad weather.

Dave will choose between a trough of sawdust or one of sugar to gauge the appeal of the economy. The troughs, nestled inside custom-made pig houses, will be positioned at either end of the stage where the savvy swine will be turned loose to choose.

Darke County Chamber of Commerce member Jim Buchy and Chamber Ambassador Ray Donadio will kick off the inaugural forecasting event. Chamber Chairman and Commissioner Terry Hayworth and Jim Leftwich, COO of the Dayton Development Coalition, will discuss the local economy.

Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray is the keynote speaker. “I have heard of pigs blowing down houses and deciphering spider webs, but to the best of my knowledge, this will be the first time one will be called upon to predict a state's economic future,” Cordray said.

Cordray, a five-time Jeopardy champion who also studied economics at Oxford , underscored that he is aware of the difference between pork belly futures and pigs predicting the future. However, enlisting a pig to foretell the economy is no more of a stretch than getting a groundhog to forecast weather: “Nationally, Ohio ranks in the top ten in pork production. For every hog raised here, $70 goes back into the community in the form of utilities, feed, loans, and jobs. One in five jobs in our state is somehow tied to agriculture,” he noted.

The event's primary sponsor is the Darke County Association of Realtors. Sponsor of the breakfast meal is the Darke County Pork Producers.

The event begins at 8 a.m. at Romer's Catering, 118 East Main Street in Greenville .
